If you haven’t heard by now, the recent story of a boy drifting away in a homemade hot-air balloon was a complete hoax. It has recently come to light that the purpose of the hoax was for footage for a TV show to raise money. The intended purpose of that money? To build a bunker for protection from the sun exploding in 2012.

“Heene believes the world is going to end in 2012,” she said. “Because of that, he wanted to make money quickly, become rich enough to build a bunker or something underground, where he can be safe from the sun exploding.”
Heene is the father of the child who was supposedly in the balloon but was actually hiding in an attic. I commented this morning on a 2012 story from FoxNews which you can read here: NASA Vs. Mayans: Doomsday Won’t Be in 2012
The Heenes apparently wanted to star in a reality show focusing on a range of bizarre experiments, such as trying to attract UFOs with a weather balloon. Thomas [a friend] worked with Richard Heene on the idea for the show from March until May.
I really didn’t want to talk about the balloon story because it’s absolutely everywhere online. However, the attempts to contacts aliens and the belief in 2012 by the perpetrators made it irresistible for me.
There are different levels of stupidity and asinine behavior. One level is sending police, military and news copters on a chase through the air to rescue someone who isn’t actually in the air. It’s a whole other level to do it to raise money to protect yourself from a doomsday theory and to attempt to contact UFOs. But wait, there is also yet another level:
The Heenes twice appeared on the TV reality show “Wife Swap,” including a March episode in which they discuss their approach to parenting and talk about their belief that they’re the descendants of aliens.
Seriously, it is like this story was meant for me to read.
Let’s break this down into parts:
The 2012 Doomsday Theory
I already covered a lot of this in NASA Vs. Mayans: Doomsday Won’t Be in 2012 but I am willing to add to it.
Here are some facts about 2012:

- It has been designated Alan Turing Year commemorating the centennial of the mathematician’s birth.
- Superbowl XLVI will be held in this year.
Here are the myths:

- The world is going to end because an ancient Mayan calendar ends: Most classic Maya inscriptions are strictly historical and do not make any prophetic declarations. Modern Maya attach no significance to 2012.
- The world will end due to a massive geomagnetic reversal: These take thousands of years to happen and have no specific start date or catalytic moment.
- Planet Nibiru will collide with earth: 1) No such planet. 2) Was supposed to happen in 2003 but didn’t so they moved it to 2012. 3) Proponents got their information from aliens.
- The black hole at the center of our galaxy will destroy the galaxy and Earth: This process will take place over tens of millions of years, and could never be assigned to a specific date.
Contacting Aliens Using a Balloon
If SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) Projects such as SETI@Home have not been able to accomplish this feat with massive Radio Telescopes… Your dinky balloon isn’t going to help much.
Being Descended From Aliens
This is starting to seem plausible, at least for the Heenes… I doubt they were super-intelligent aliens though.
