A newborn girl was taken into care because it was feared she would pile on excessive weight in the care of her obese parents.
The child was removed from her mother within hours of being born earlier this week and has been placed with a foster family.
Her parents, who are both clinically obese, have already had two children taken into care amid concerns about the youngsters’ weight.
Can you say Nanny State!? I am not even sure where to begin when it comes to this story… I cannot believe this is a legitimate reason to place a child in foster care.
Before she became pregnant, the mother weighed 23st. At that time one of her children, a toddler, weighed 4st and her 13-year-old son weighed 16st.
Quickly, here are the conversions:
- The Mother (23st) : 322lbs, 146kg
- The toddler (4st) : 56lbs, 25kg
- The 13-year-old (16st) : 224lbs, 101kg
Now, I will admit those are some high numbers. But, taking away a child because he or she could become overweight? That just seems unbelievable to me.
As part of my research for this story I downloaded the “Children Act 1989″ which governs these things and have yet to find mention of the word obesity.
The ironic part? In 2008 a study was published by S.C. Hadfield and P.M. Preece of Chesterfield Royal Hospital in the UK which found “Looked after care did not protect a child from the national problem of increasing weight gain and obesity.” Looked after children are more likely to be overweight and obese compared with standard norms, and there are a number of children (35%) whose BMI increases once in care. [1]
It get’s worse…
YESTERDAY: Children’s Panel decide the three youngsters still living at home should go into care.
This is just scary… You know, these children will be overweight whoever brings them up. They are genetically pre-disposed to obesity. [WP: genetic obesity]
Can you imagine if these types of measures came to Canada or the United States? It would be pandemonium.
I will keep you updated on Twitter as I continue to research the legalities of this.
